More google searches

(all the kids are doing it.... here are more google searches that led to my own little pothole on the information superhighway )

  • Transition lenses suck - sorry you think so! I don't.

  • being 40 - I get this one in my sitemeter lists all the time. I am NOT 40, people. (F*ck, I'm 41.)

  • Tiffany Granath boyfriend - Ms. Granath is married to NHL defenseman Brad Norton. (Try wikipedia once in a while.) He's pretty hot (duh, he's a hockey player!) - - oh, and if you listen to her show you know he's not in Detroit anymore. SO hopefully he will stop by someday soon when Paul Hughes is on Tiff''s show and kick Paul's smug obnoxious ass....

  • Quotes speak with unlocked hearts - this one kind of makes me sad. Sorry.

  • words to a song sung in hee haw - hopefully my blog has never been QUITE that bad...

  • cornish game hens desperate housewives - um, well, I've got nothing on that
Aaaaaaaand, my favorite recent search referring some helpless internet user to my blog:

  • igallop hurts butt - try a trot. (Actually I was dismayed to discover that I DID once blog about the igallop...I need to go lie down....)

I wonder

  • if Bevin has her swim fins on already?

  • if I can get away with posting the photo of me, holding my brand new baby nephew, with him immediately picking his nose? (ok, he wasn't, but it sure looked like it)

  • if I can lock myself in the bathroom for MOST of the HSM 2 premiere tomorrow?

  • if Collichio really thinks that highly of himself?

  • who has more std's now, Brit or Kenny Chesney(see photo above)?

  • who let this happen? Whyyyyyy?

what do you wonder?

Happy Friday!

New Stuff

In increasing order of happy
  • Knee pain has been added to my daily nonsense... which ranks right over there on the waaaaay negative side of the scale. Yesterday's fire drill did not help (walking/ limping down 4 flights of stairs) - but the woman I felt worse for was a former state worker who was new to our building and didn't realize it wasn't real. (The loudspeaker ALWAYS plays a recorded drone reciting "there HAS been an emergency reported in the building. Please leave immediately...") She was bugging out until someone realized, and told her "We do this 4x a year, it's a drill." Egads. Understand, I'm not making fun of her at all. Six years later, I still instantly think of one day, every time I see a plane fly sideways.
  • Matchbox twenty has new music out (I almost saved this for last on the list but what kind of Aunt would I be?) - I'm not happy that the next album(Oct 2) will be "a retrospective hits collection" but hopefully there will be enough new stuff to make it worth my while, and I definitely like the new song.
  • Kanye West, Stronger, (video link) is even better, based on my highly scientific rating scale--how many times I replay it on my Sirius radio. Me raving is a death knell for his career, right?
  • New nephew! (Names & details not to be provided here, because, um, they don't know I have a blog...)

When the stars go blue

Well, I set my alarm clock for 3 AM, so that I could look for meteors. Carly is no longer typically awake at 3 AM; this should be obvious to anyone who's read me bloggin'.

When the alarm went off, I stood up, put my shoes on, donned my funky Supergirl glasses* and staggered out onto the deck, to find...

clouds.

Complete cloud cover.

I guess I'll have to stick to Perez Hilton for my starwatching.

*Seriously. People react differently to me in the glasses, what is that? ;-)

Bring That Beat Back To Me Again

Listening to Dave Matthews Band (Old dirt road) - "...the first time I kissed you, I lost my legs"

I feel strangely like I have lost my running legs. I think I pulled a muscle or two. Something's not right; when I try to run I feel like my entire left leg is jarring, from hip to knee, and I am lurching. So I quit, wait a week, try again, same result. It's been 3 or 4 weeks now.

I miss running! Yesterday it was gorgeous, and I couldn't run. Dammit. Then in the pool, I jumped up to hit the "volleyball" and I can't recall whether it hurt more to leap up, or to land, but it was not a good thing.

The disheartening part is that my primary care physician thinks I shouldn't run at all. He didn't want to hear anything about how slowly I'd started, or gradually increased. I said, well, eventually I'll probably just go back to walking. Nope.

Swimming. That was the only exercise that he felt was apropriate for me. Yeah. Um, no. I can't really swim.

SO, now I need to find a doctor who will diagnose whatever I did to myself, and give me some treatment advice. I'd like to be able to run again, but I'd be happy to take a long (30 - 45 minutes) walk without pain.

Fon-don't

The new Wilton Yearbook is out. Ten years ago, that sentence would have had me in my car immediately, on the way to Michael's.

I got into cake decorating while I was trying to get pregnant. (It's a long story, and a whole lot messier than that one tidy sentence lets on.) At any rate, it was a diversion, and those weekly cakes I worked on in class for 3 months made me pretty damn popular at work for a while.

I fell away from cake decorating a while after trying my first "paid" cake. It was a birthday cake for my friend's daughter, and had Aladdin's blanket, and some figures from the cake store. It cracked across the middle, in a very bad, noticeable way, and the repair didn't hold.

After that I stuck to making cakes for family parties. I made a solemn vow to Never Make Anyone's Wedding Cake Because I'm Not a Professional, and I've stuck to that. Shower and anniversary cakes, yes.

Every year Wilton puts out their yearbook, a magazine showcasing whatever new shaped pans they've created, and various designs using other existing pans. I stopped buying the Wilton yearbook for a while, because it was too heavy on fondant. Rolled fondant, if you don't watch Ace of Cakes, is something of an edible clay made of sugar and water, but it doesn't really taste very good. It's gluey, more like a marshmallow than a regular frosting.

For a while, every Wilton yearbook cake had the stuff on it. This year it's nice to see they've gradually returned to the more traditional methods, like making flowers from royal icing and using 10,000 stars to cover a cake with frosting. (Fun unless it's YOU doing it... )

Pay no attention to the tacky "castle" pieces on the cover. It's not their best yearbook ever, but some of the cakes are cute. Just stay away from that fondant!

No more posts...

I am starting to really HATE post-bound scrapbook albums. The back cover tends to rip off the posts if you put too many pages in. Annoying! Also, I can't possibly fit a year into one. (I have all of my pages for 2005 sitting on my kitchen table in page protectors, and the stack is almost 5" high. The perils of having a digital camera...)

For a while a local scrapbook store had Hiller "ring" 12x12 albums (aka We R Memory Keepers, which seems to be wildly sold out) . They have a leather cover with metal binder-type rings. I loved the way they looked, and the kids can easily browse through them. Michael's had them too, but now effing Martha Stewart scrapbook supplies have taken over that store. I don't want to buy her stuff just on principle (she's a snooty hag!), and who the FUCK needs an 18 x 18 " post bound album??? Can I express how STUPID (not to mention expensive - $80 for 20 pages...) they are? That's enormous. A small child can't possibly sit with it on their lap, and kids love to look through Mom's scrapbooks.

So tonight I found these and now I am HAPPY. They were only $20 each and shipping was about $3 each.

Now that I've changed your lives (ha!).... have a nice weekend.

A quiet kind of happy

I'm in love...

Isn't he the cutest little guy in the world? I heart you, N. (He was fascinated with that necklace. You probably can't see the tiny ring he's wearing, with an "N" engraved on it.) Just so adorable!

(I feel the need to explain that I don't USUALLY have twelve chins... as far as I know...)

Today is a quiet kind of day. I took yesterday off because my daughter needed to go get more parts to her braces (on the side teeth that are FINALLY growing in) and she was crying, and asking ME to bring her. Oy. So she is still in pain... that stuff hurts! My son is in bed sleeping (it's the middle of the afternoon) because he's had golf camp all week, and now it's rainy and perfect for napping.

This morning at 7 a.m. I found myself in the dentist's chair getting a cavity filled. So much wrong with that, I can't even start. ( A. Jovial dentist with growling stomach. B. My face was numb until 1 pm... scary)

Now, however I am listening to Sirius (Jazz Cafe), enjoying the rain and cool breezes, and just generally mulling over how to spend the next few hours. Scrapbook time!

I could definitely be a housewife... so why am I negotiating to work longer hours? Money. Ugh.

Yesterday D. assembled shelves that sit right in front of my treadmill. They are now holding a small TV and DVD player, just above eye level. Perfect - NOW I can watch every episode of Sex and The City all over again this winter!

Rocking old memories

I'm a rocking girl, according to Beth.
Thanks Beth!!!I would have to nominate Sarah, and Sassy Blondie -oh, and Cecily. I'd nominate Poly just to give her this pretty pink button but you can't read her blog. Sorry. It's just for special people -- I think she lets me read it just out of sympthy for my dorkness.

Now for my acceptance speech. Hmm.

I got to thinking about various speeches I have given in my lifetime.

High school graduation. I was the Salutatorian. You don't have to give a speech about world politics if you're #2. Everyone knows you're kinda smart, but not the smartest kid on the stage, so there is no pressure to awe your listeners.

I spoke about the fun we'd had all senior year (a little trip down memory lane) with the sole goal of being able to mention the names of the boys who wore skirts on Dress Up Day of senior week.

College. In college I had to take all sorts of random General Education requirements even though I was studying Math with a minor in Computer Science. No lie, I took children's theatre*, religions of the world, water color painting, all sorts of shizzle. Except no one said shizzle then, because it was 20 years ago, and I don't think anyone says shizzle anymore, so my daughter better not catch me using that expression.

Anyway.

I also took a Nutrition class because it was an easy way to get the science credit I needed. So one week we all had to do a report in front of the class. We each were randomly assigned a diet and had to report on the pros/cons. I got Ayds. Remember Ayds? They were badly named diet "candies". You were supposed to eat one when you got hungry.

I bought a box, and tried one, and read the materials that came with it. On class day I brought the box to class, and passed it around, and offered one to each student. As they were chomping away I let them know that the primary way this diet worked was that the candy contained a small amount of local anaesthetic. That's right. Your tongue and part of your mouth goes a little numb, and then the effect is supposed to spread to your stomach. That's the plan anyway. I got queasy. I got a couple of the prissy little rich girls pretty annoyed too. Haha.

*I was in this play about some stupid mouse with a dumb name that I can't remember (it will come to me), and Pete the Cat was after me, and we performed this play for a bunch of preschoolers, and one literally walked up to me and was yanking on me, screaming "Turn around! Pete the Cat is right behind you and he's going to get you!" Sit down, you little crumbsnatcher. Shaddap.

That's pretty much the extent of my formal speech giving, although I spent a couple of years as a corporate trainer. (For example, Introduction to DOS. Type dir a: and press Enter. Joy joy.) It was boring but got me to Seattle, which is a great city, and up to Maine, which I enjoyed a great deal. Beautiful places.

In a world where Chacchi is a stud(WTF????), and people seem to care more about where Lindsey Lohan is in Utah than finding six hard working miners, I'm not sure that this award means much more than validation that I've got a couple of nice friends who appreciate me for who I am. But isn't that a lot?

The Penguins are Killing me

Class, let's discuss Club Penguin.

This site is insanely addictive among young elementary school kids... the hook is that you CAN sign up and get a screen name for free. You can play games. You get a running tally of coins you win. You can "buy" things for your penguin with those coins.

Except.

Some things, you can't buy. Because you're not a MEMBER. As in, someone who has badgered their Mom for weeks, nay, months, to please, please PLEASE, sign me up for $6 a month. So I can buy my penguin a different color shirt. Just like all of my friends.

Today, I caved. The night before school starts, I'm killing a penguin. (it's still a month away here, FYI to my southern friends).

Where I wanna be....

Programmers are stupid

(And, I am one.)

For a while now I haven't been able to switch to the Edit HTML tab. Because for some reason on my PC, if I click on the WORDS "Edit HTML" the tab ignores me. But if you click just BELOW the words, barely on the tab at all... you suddenly feel the urge to thwap a developer on the back of their head.

Grrrrrrrr.

For your amusement

Try out Tun3r

The squares are all radio stations. Click anywhere to get started, or drag the orange needle.

Below the grid of squares is info on whatever station you've clicked on...

Today

was a come home, put on shorts and a cool tank top (it's about 92*, more in my house), light a candle, open a bottle of pinot grigio, light a scented candle, cut a thick slice of "tuscan" bread a la Hannaford, and sing along with the part where Fergie's friend says "f--- you, b--ches....."

and how was YOUR day?

The Target is on his forehead

Today in Target (where I spend altogether too much of my time AND money) I was waiting for my offspring to use the restroom.

I watched while someone ELSE's stupid boy wheeled a cart down an aisle near me. There were a few shirts on hangers that had fallen off of a stick/rack (because they always put too many on each one, but that's a rant for another day). This guy ran RIGHT OVER them with the cart. I swear. He was at least 15, and had to have seen them a mile away, and could have avoided them by putting the cart 6" to his left.

So I walked over and started picking up the shirts and putting them back on the hook. (Because I am a mom and it is a Pavlovian response, to pick shirts up off the floor and hang them back up. Okay? whatever.)

I was not huffing or sighing or anything Mom-like, untill he starting backing up the cart right AT ME. I snapped "Don't run me over, I'm picking up the stuff you already ran over with the cart." He just jerked the cart a little to the side and said "Yeah. See you later" in that endearing monotone and walked away.

So help me. If my son ever pulls that crap he will need to have his jaw wired shut. WTF? It was just so obnoxious that he didn't even care he ran them over (probably ruined them, I didn't really look ) and didn't care when I called him out on it.

But that's ok, you little shit. I can guarantee you'll fail your driver's test at least twice.

Blog links

I like Google Reader, because I can sort of peek at what's going on in the world when I'm :::cough::: not taking a smoking break at work. You know. In the time that I would be smoking, since I don't smoke, I surf just a little.

One bad thing about Google Reader is that you don't see who other people link to, unless you jump into their blogs.

I'll forgive various people who never post (Shamus and John, you bastards) and keep them in my links if they get their act together. (Steve, where are you?)

I added the Dilbert Blog to my sidebar links (Scott is hilarious). I'm still trying to figure out what's up with Magnum.

At any rate... please tell me two blogs you have discovered lately that you like. Comments, people!

One reason

I don't go camping:

http://www.wikihow.com/Clean-Dishes-on-a-Camping-Trip

Bears vs. Carly => bears will have a big dinner...

I found a kayak I like on Dick's website... around $700 for everything so it's possible I could get one next year (they ship after 2-3 weeks so why bother this year? plus, I'm broke right now...)

http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2228186&cp=2367826.2672651.2674153.2291570&view=all&parentPage=family&searchId=2291570

I'm not worried about buying a kayak to hold "gear"... tents, etc. All of my bedding will be back in my room at the Sagamore, thanks. Each condo even has a fireplace. What?

***

I broke free (temporarily) today from Mommy Guilt and snuck out to go swimming. Alone. No wave pool, no long foam noodle battles, just me and Dierks. Bliss, for 90 minutes.

***

My hip is better. It's been almost two weeks. I'm not sure how I effed it up (aside from thinking that Sgt's explaination of "crappy running form" probably covers it). I need to start running again. I mean I neeeeeeeed to. Because yesterday I was thinking "oh my god, it's almost Christmas". That right there my friends, is proof that running keeps me from going over the falls. But not to worry, I will start with walking. I've got 10 weeks until the Komen race.

A perfect day

In 1791, Thomas Jefferson wrote "Lake George is without comparison the most beautiful water I ever saw. Its water is limpid as crystal and the mountainsides are covered with rich groves of fir, pine, aspen, and birch down to the waters edge".

Kayaking was great, I absolutely loved it. Except I was a little spazzy; instead of a straight line my boat was often swizzling. Dammit. I may have hit my brother in law's boat several times; I actually almost put the front end of my boat up and on his once. He's a very good sport.

For those of you who know the Sagamore, we started on the north side of that island, went around it clockwise, then down along the west side of the lake in the general direction heading toward Million Dollar beach (but not very far down, the water was too choppy). Then we went back, ducked under the bridge that goes to the Sagamore from the mainland, and went up north an hour or so. Finally I decided I'd had enough (to my BIL's relief) so we went back. We spent about 3 1/2 hours on the water (I'd still be there if I could).

I am soooooo putting "buy a kayak" on my list of life goals.

The Sagamore

I mean, really. Just go.

No, really

Problems of dimwitted starlets aside, this shit is pretty cool...

I'd rant about how our culture glamourizes all of the celebrity/ party / gossip culture, and so then we NEED inventions like this, but frankly I'm too tired. (Posh can take her fake boobs and float back to London on them, for all I care.)

Planked again

Today I didn't grill the other package of cornish game hens from Dinner by Design. The grill won't light the last two days, even though there is gas in the tank ... I am a little tired of these cornish hens getting the better of me. So I threw them in the oven and showed THEM who's boss. Yes I did. They were tasty. Not necessarily $10 worth of tasty, but I'll find out next time I'm in the market. (Two and a half hens plus spice rub can't cost THAT MUCH.)

The plank is sitting on my counter, laughing at me. Yeah, kinda just like you are, right now. I think the grill found out I was feeling up other (much bigger) gas grills at Lowe's last night, and it's pissed at me.

On the upside I stopped by DbD this afternoon, and the owner whipped up some peach grapefruit relish for me, so I now have two more packages of Mahi-mahi in my freezer, which is awesome.

Mr. Carly said he wanted a new hoe, and we actually had a few laughs about that on the way to Lowe's. Laughing isn't something we do a lot of lately. ::::thud::::

We left with the hoe, and a window washer for my son - a combo sponge and squeegee, he did the windows today... (I am going to teach him how to do all the things around the house that I wish his father was doing. Mwahaha. Oh shit, is that why we don't laugh together anymore? D'oh.)

I also got a shelf for the little tv that will go next to my treadmill this winter, and some batteries. So in the end (ha) that hoe cost $150. Bitch.

We passed through the kitchen display area and I saw a demo set up that I liked, and so I asked for a small brochure with that particular style of cabinet in it. Dumbass... the clerk thought she had a live one and gave me 3 catalogs totaling up to about two pounds, despite my protests. I hope she's not counting on me to make a commisison for the next five years or so. I've got kids with really nasty dental x rays to deal with first.

Well, almost time to find out if I'll have to continue seeing Rory's giant gums on Food Tv, or if it will be Ms. Fancy Schmantzy. Hmm. Not sure I care. But it's kind of like, you read all of these books about this boy wizard and you have to find out if he lives. Or something like that.

Only slightly spoiled

I bought a pair of these for $20 even though I don't skateboard... they're C1rca's if you care.

So, I just read the last page. Yes, of THAT. Don't worry, I'm not going to tell you. Geez. But it was fun to just walk up, flip open to the last page, and know(and watch the clerk roll his eyes).
Thanks for your feedback on, well, my aching back. I decided I'm taking this coming week off and only walking. (Except for my kayaking adventure that is planned for Wednesday.)
Ciao, everybody!

Not feeling blogadocious

these days...

  • ran yesterday, hurt afterward (hips).... not happy. Been running for almost 9 months now, wtf, half of my clothes still don't fit.
  • bought a new Alton Brown cookbook (it's a couple of years old) about baking. His Bill Nye sort of mad scientist still entertains me.
  • still don't know what's up with my job... these things never move quickly, but I'm pessimistic.
  • every day I have off, it rains like crazy... hey, great fun this summer, huh kids??
  • got my "kit of the month" from Lisa Bearnson, and I'm crazy happy with it (makes 75 scrapbook style greeting cards/ 20 gift card holders, and several other goodies, cost $40)
  • still singing most Sundays, even though choir is officially on vacation. I would rather be up there... some of the songs are slightly rough but Betty and I did one this past weekend that seemed to go really well in my mind, and one of my neighbors made a point to compliment me, which made me VERY happy.
  • can someone explain to me why I can't click on the Edit HTML tag anymore? this will be a PITA this fall - I use a separate blog for our PTO's minutes.

that's all I've got...

Looks like we're 2 - 1 - 1

Another meal from Dinner by Design. Salmon patties. Or, shall we say, "bits of salmon that are supposed to stay together in a hockey puck configuration, but really seemed disinclined to do so" ?

I was supposed to set them in a skillet in a little bit of olive oil and flip once. Hahahaha.

Well, the chunks were tasty. But the tartar sauce completely separated from being frozen. It looked nasty and there was no way I'd even consider eating it. (Think runny egg yolks with green chunks. Mmmm, tasty.)

The funny thing is, we have 3 more of these little bundles of joy in my freezer. I'm toying with just treating the next batch something like a big blob of hamburger and stir frying it. Let the flakes fall where they may.

I almost counted it as a win, because it was yummy.... but the tartar sauce just killed it. So to review,
  • Alfredo pasta and chicken and veggies - good
  • Mahi mahi with peach /grapefruit relish - awesome
  • Cornish hens - bad (due to cooking failure - lack of directions for grilling w/o plank)
  • Salmon patties - good, sauce bad.

Happy weekend everyone.

iRun

This seems to be my safest alternative for self-tranquilization.

Things at work are iffy. I took a gamble, and it could go either way... really well, or really badly.

Certain things frustrate/annoy me, over and over, a little too often. The only alternatives I've seen so far have aspects that make them not any better than the particular problems I'm wishing to address.
So rather than just standing still in the quicksand or banging my head on the nearest tree, I slap on the sneakers. I lurch and stumble and frankly, the next day my hips and back ache a little. But it's something.
Happy fucking Friday the 13th. Were you expecting sneaker haiku? Oh well.
Last night I found out that a NICU baby I thought was pretty damn cute is now in foster care. Which is actually a good thing, given the situation. It just sucks that there's a situation.
Sometimes I feel like I'm stumbling around there without a clue when I'm volunteering, but a nurse made me feel a little better this week, telling that I did help one mom (who frankly I thought was not impressed with me in the least, best case, or I thought perhaps I had even offended her with with my fumbling helpfulness... ) It turns out she was happy with what I'd done for her, but of course she is not in a place in her life where she could be all friendly. Not that she owes me anything. I just don't want to leave someone worse off than when I found them, so I'd been feeling a bit guilty or something vaguely like that.
A close friend of mine pointed out something to me. When I'm really upset I avoid thinking about my own issues and do something nice for someone else instead. So I guess that's one reason why I want my NICU work to yield something positive. So I can say "yeah, this part of my life is fucked up, but see over here, I did this, and it was good." Is this a coping mechanism, or just plain avoidance? I'm tired of feeling like I'm right on the edge, and my life is about to either fall into pieces, or FINALLY get on the right track and head in the direction I want it to go. Limbo is a sucky place to be.
I guess I'd better go put those sneakers on.

  • see a broadway show
  • shop in Macy's

Success

Tonight we had the mahi mahi from Dinner by Design. Here's my photo...

We were all VERY happy with how it tasted. None of us have ever had mahi mahi so that was fun.

I rolled it in Italian style breadcrumbs before I sauteed it. All I did was pan fry it (couldn't grill... massive thunderstorms tonight.... I was going to call my friend Evan and see if he was out in the boat...) so that was simple.

The peach/pink grapefruit salsa was delicious. Now if I could just remember what else was in it! That's the only downside of making six things at once.

Success! Who needs a damn cornish hen anyway??

Mike Turino

This morning I dropped my kids off at a friend's house for the day. I've never been to her house so I google mapped how to get over there, and I brought a print screen with me in the Jeep.

We pulled in to the driveway of #11 WhateverStreet and got out, with tote bags (snacks, juice, bathing suits....)

We rang the bell and nothing happened. (She has two kids so I expected them to appear quickly at the door.)

Hmmm.

After a minute or two I rang again and after a while we heard the thump of approaching feet. But they sounded like big feet.

Double Hmmmm.

A guy opened the door and stared at me. I was pretty sure I'd never seen him before in my life, and I think I'd remember. I've met Amelia's husband, but only once, but I'm pretty sure he didn't change THIS much in a few short months.

I was telling Suzy about this at lunch time and she interrupted at this point and said "Did he look like Mike Turino?"

Eh?

We then had a whole conversation about Mike Delfino, the plumber from Desperate Housewives. I don't know Mike Turino, but I'm sure he's hot too.

I said "I think you mean McSteamy, coming out of the shower when McDreamy was talking to Addison. Towel, steam, six pack abs."

Except it wasn't. This guy was older, balder, and had the wrong kind of six pack evidence if you know what I mean.

There was a lovely beater car in the driveway, and he was looking at my kids (carrying full tote bags, remember) and clearly thinking "I didn't kill that rabbit". (*)

SO I asked "Um, is Amelia here?" feeling pretty sure I knew the answer. In a thick irish brogue (I swear) he said "I thin' ye got the wrong house." He didn't finish with "....Luv" but he might as well have.

We made it back to the car before dissolving into hysterical laughter. My kids, fortunately, are used to my brand of stupid and found it very funny that we were supposed to be at #33, not #11. It was all right on the printscreen....

*A 90-year-old man said to his doctor, "I've never felt better. I have an 18-year old bride who is pregnant with my child. What do you think about that?"

The doctor considered his question for a minute and then said, "I have an elderly friend who is a hunter and never misses a season. One day when he was going out in a bit of a hurry, he accidentally picked up his umbrella instead of his gun. When he got to the Creek, he saw a rabbit sitting beside the stream. He raised his umbrella and went, 'bang, bang' and the rabbit fell dead. What do you think of that?"

The 90-year-old said, "I'd say somebody else killed that rabbit."

The doctor replied, "My point exactly."

How not to grill

Step 1... go all the way to a place where other people chop and prep things, and pay $10 for 3 halves of cornish game hen with some spices rubbed on.

Step 2... fail to notice when stuffing the freezer that the hens you're leaving out require a soaked plank in order to grill. Well, make that notice and decide to grill them anyway, because soaking would take too long so we'll use that plank with the OTHER hens some other day.

Step 3... preheat grill and forget to turn off middle section when placing hens on grill. Becuase, you know, indirect heat might have been successful.

Step 4... walk back into house and deal with other things. Idly notice the large puff of smoke when THIS flareup happens...

... but be far enough away to not be able to do a damn thing about it. Resign self to the inevitable humilation of someday losing a throwdown with Bobby Flay.

Aieeee. The pasta alfredo with veggies was very good though.

My freezer is stuffed

Today I went to Dinner by Design. I'm struggling with the right word to sum it up because "fun" is a little bit too bouncy and "pleasant" sounds stupid.

My daughter and I had some time together, and that was nice, and we joked a little and got silly here and there, but it was work. It took an hour and a half to make six entrees.

The chicken pesto pasta was one of the easiest things. The spaghetti was already cooked, and we mixed in some chopped frozen carrots and broccoli, plus a bit of mozzarella, and then took alfredo sauce that was already made, mixed in some pesto, and something else I can't remember. Maybe garlic. (We worked for an hour and a half on six recipes so it's a little blurry.) Put it in foil pans, slap a label on them, and done. No chopping, cooking the pasta or the chicken, etc. Nice. It must be a HELL of a lot of prep work, or they get all the veggies prechopped and frozen. I dunno. I wasn't completely impressed with how much chicken went in. Didn't seem like enough for 6 people.

Next we made bourbon bbq chicken. The chicken breasts (bone in) were frozen, so they were easy to handle. We basically just mixed a bbq sauce from scratch with ketchup, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, etc. The chicken goes back in ziplock bags and is now back in my freezer. (Not much marinade goes in the bags but you bring home a small container of it so you can baste while grilling)

The mahi mahi looks really tasty - a salsa with peach and grapefruit to go on top. I was kind of hoping to try that tonight, but I let my daughter pick (and, the fish fit in my freezer, the pan of alfredo didn't. )

The nice thing was that I could take each entree I made and split it in half. (They charge $10 total extra for the half size foil pans but it's worth it.) My kids are going to be a little hesitant to try some of the things I made, so I more or less said "Ok, you're going to try a few bites of the third portion each time, and I'll have your stupid boxed Kraft macaroni and cheese made too if you bail out on it. No worries."

The hardest one was the salmon patties, that my daughter had a REALLY hard time forming. I felt like maybe there wasn't enough egg or something to hold it together.
(OF COURSE that was what I double ordered....)

Tonight we're trying the plank grilled cornish hens, and the pesto pasta. Film at 11.

Glamorous Bananas

So. A question.

If I download a song and have to pick between the "clean" and the explicit version, am I a bad mother for letting my 13 year old listen to the explicit one because that's the version I like better?

Am I being realistic or hypocritical if I tell her that a certain word/phrase is gauche/impolite and then let her hear a song that uses it, knowing that she'll come across that version of the song anyways with friends, or elsewhere (the bus driver plays hardcore rap on his radio, for crying out loud, with a busload of little catholic school kids)?

What's worse - to let her know what a "naughty" word or phrase means, or to let her be naieve when other kids her age probably have that particular knowledge? I mean, I'm not showing her porn online or anything. But if I explain what U + Ur Hand means, am I an indecent freak (ditto for thinking the song is funny)? If she likes songs by Fergie and Gwen Stefani instead of Hannah Montana am I obligated to censor her music tastes in order to be a "good mother"?

Do I have enough catholic guilt going on in this post, Poly?

Words of wisdom from the old guy

I heard an interesting little clip on Sirius/198 today; Hef talking about reinventing himself and that he has done so multiple times in his life.

What I took away from it is a reminder that you can reinvent yourself at any point in your life. How you look/act, what you do with your time. Common sense, but how many of us stop to think about that once in a while?

Pondering begins.

Remember sugar cubes?

Did you ever drop a sugar cube into a cup of water right out of the microwave?

It sinks to the bottom. Thousands of bubbles surge up. Then the sugar cube withers and vanishes before your eyes.

When you're cranky, it's hard not to identify with that sugar cube. Pity party for two, anyone??

Oh deer

It's 99 days until the race for the cure.

This morning it was cool and sunny and I went for a run. (Run/walk. Ralk? Wun?)

I was going around a bend in the road, uphill of course, and there were wooded areas on both sides of the road. I normally take at least one earpiece out of my iPod so that a car coming around the blind curve doesn't make me CarlyMush.

It's a good thing I did, because I heard a crashing in the woods about 10 feet ahead of me, which was a little warning. Otherwise, when the deer burst out of those trees, leaping across the road to the other side, I really would have had a heart attack.

At least bambi missed me. How freaking embarrassing would it be to go fill THAT out in an ER report? "Uh, yeah. I got hit by a deer."

Legs

Listen. Really. Quit screaming. No one can hear you but me, and I don't care.

Ass is finally in gear so if you think I'm going to let you off the hook you're crazy. I know Arms are just sort of flopping around and I really don't get WHAT is going on with Lungs, they seem to show up to work only once in a while.

Heart has been pretty good but maybe the surgery drove home the point that I'm not kidding. It's been a couple of years (3?) with no problems so I don't think we'll have more trouble in that area.

SO, in short(s), keep moving.

See Carly Run

Today I registered for the 2007 Komen Northeastern New York Race for the Cure. Same park/ route (same motherfucking hill right at the start) but October 6, it better not be 90* with a thousand percent humidity.

Today I ran like crap. Coincidence? I think not.

Its definitely the thought that counts

Yesterday I was in the weeds - way behind from the 2nd item on my long list forward.

I came home to find that my son had made my bed, and folded all of the clothes I'd strewn all over, (I was thinking summer, then finding out it was FREEZING, and running home to change, etc).

He left a note - "you do stuff for me, I do stuff you" (sic)

(Honey, I'd rather have you cremate me, then take a canoe ride some beautiful summer morning to scatter my ashes over a scenic little lake.)

Dear birds

You nasty little wormsuckers. Did the skunks put you up to this? I can't have a full night's sleep in my OWN HOME with the windows open without waking up at 4:30 a.m. ??

I thought it was bad when Pepe' would walk by every night last summer around midnight, because my room would fill with the whiff of him, whether or not he was annoyed, and then Mr. Carly and I would have the skunk argument (close the windows! no, he's gone, let's get the smell out!)

Do I really need to be awakened by the sound of your incessant tweedling? Listen I was having a GOOD dream this morning. Can you wrap your little bird brain around that? I mean, I know it would fit in a thimble and all but.... dammit.

Oh and tell Rabbit that I'm going to kick his ass too if he doesn't stop eating all my plants. I see the tiny little stems sheared off by his teeth much longer, and I'm googling hasenpfeffer recipes. I'm so not kidding.

Freaks of the day

1. Paul Rubens, aka Pee-wee. Future Pee-wee movies?
He hopes to usher two of his Pee-wee-centered screenplays into production soon. One follows the bow-tied protagonist and his old “Playhouse” pals on a road-trip adventure. The other, which Reubens describes as “the dark Pee-wee movie,” explores how Pee-wee deals with Hollywood and the trappings of fame.

These are still the funniest sneakers I've ever seen.

2. The dude with the alligator in his basement.... one heck of a potential blind date if I say so myself... thanks Tay.

3. The person* who invented "tag day" also known as "fuck up traffic for miles by standing in the road so that you (through guilt) convince people to 'buy' a small worthless piece of paper to support t-ball, soccer, or pee wee (heh) football". *Ass.

Honorable mention to the woman who complimented me on my hair (new highlights) and then asked "Did you just have them done today?" (It was 8:07 a.m. ...so, no.)

Additional honorable mention to Shop Dungarees. Our IM conversation went something like this today:

  • talk about running and how far I run around my park, with me giving him the address and us using Google maps to both look at it while I tell him which roads are hills, etc. and showing where it is in relation to my house
  • him telling me he could drive to my house within 8 hours
  • me saying "sure, Mr. Carly will be asleep by the time you get here"
  • him threatening to actually do it just to videotape my reaction
  • me laughing nervously. Hi, John.... if he's really doing this shit he's more than halfway here... of course I did mention that I have a wireless network and he could dial in to work from here... whatever...

More on the people I share a building with

Yesterday I was walking in to my office building behind a woman who had a lovely designer purse over her left shoulder.

In her right hand, she was carrying a very large, bright yellow cordless Stanley power drill. Matter of factly holding it down by her hip, like one might stroll around carrying a small pistol. Casual, sort of. Like yes, hey, I'm secure in my right to keep and bear power tools so I don't neeeeed no steeeenking tote bag.

Of COURSE she got on my elevator, and I employed the "I don't see you" technique I practiced in Manhattan.

As Johnny said, "Someone's gonna get screwed today".

Random thoughts

It's hard to make chicken caesar salad if you go to the store and buy lettuce, dressing, bread, snacks for school, yogurt, cereal, spaghetti, laundry detergent, orange juice, milk, and toilet paper. Where's the chicken in that list? Exactly, dammit.

Suzy and I gave my father "The Girls Next Door, Season 1" for Father's day. He seemed very happy, my mother less so.

I am going to shoot 130 golfers this week. With my camera. And print on the site, and have them ready for lunch. Lunch will be 130 gulps of wine.

Why are there so many chef contests on now? Top Chef, Next Food Network Star, Hell's kitchen.... why am I hooked on them all?

(Side note: when I am pregnant, (which I am NOT) I can watch cooking shows for hours on end. I get horrible morning sickness and can't EAT anything but I love to watch people make pretty food that I don't have to smell. That's one of my quirks.)

If I'm so tired why can't I SLEEEEEP????

Stellar Service award Number Two

I was in the mall last night buying cards at a Hallmark store. If you've known me for long enough, you know that the disconnect between a fancy expensive card saying "I love you for everything you are and everything you do"... and, well, reality... makes me want to remove my own ribs one by one with a tarnished butter knife.

To top it off, at the register there were white Lindor truffles. Yummy. I know, wax and sugar. Whatever. I like them so I reached down to take two, and my fingertips registered an alarm that was briefly ignored in the chaos of handing over my cards, debit card, etc.

The candies were wet. As soon as that clicked in I said to the store clerk, "Um... these are all wet."

He didn't even bother to shrug, replying "Yeah, some lady spilled her ice tea all over them."

Oh. Kay.

I pushed them aside and said "well, obviously I'm not going to buy them then."

You would have thought I said that in Latin or something... the look I got... oy...

Bitch of the day

Today's complaint is as follows:

The person who empties the trash at my office fails at a very simple task. This, in many ways, shows what is wrong with our world today.

I'm not talking about the uber-lazy person who empties my personal garbage can (without replacing the plastic bag, :::gag:::) and puts it back in a completely different place. I mean, I know you picked it up ten whole seconds ago, but honest to god. Put it back where you got it. Not in front of the desk drawers. My cubicle is tiny.

I AM talking about the person who empties the garbage in the women's restroom*.

Am I bashing janitors? Not really, but this person puts a clean (?) bag into the garbage can in such a way that :
A) it is not fully open and
B) it is also stretched tight across the top of the receptacle, creating a sealed air pocket beneath which cannot be breached. You can't throw more than three damn paper towels into it, without whatever you're trying to discard practically bouncing back at you. I mean, it' s almost a talent to do it that way.

Why does it matter?

  • the person is doing a crappy job
  • they don't care
  • their manager either doesn't notice, or doesn't care
  • they get paid anyway

This flies in the face of silly little ideas like "responsibility" and "pride in a job well done" and most importantly, "consequences". (Paris, can you hear me?)

In this country there are FAR too many people faking it, going through the motions, fucking up what they are supposed to be doing, and pretending to be productive until they can leave work and go home.

This is why my croissant with egg and cheese is cold about 50 % of the time. (Hey, I haven't had one in months. I finally had one today, and it was cold. Give me a break.)

*I won't get into how one can't actually rest there, in the restroom, between the awkward noises from other stalls and the over-the-stall- walls conversations that sometimes occur, and the overwhelming grossness that is a huge public restroom. I mean, cooties everywhere. I just couldn't figure out whether it was grammatically correct to use " ladies' " or " ladies ". So there you go. Yes, tangents are my thing today.

Running between the raindrops

She runs in a pair of shorts and an old grey men's t-shirt, extra large. She likes the pocket, because she can stick her iPod in it. Not tonight though - tonight, it's raining. She wears a baseball cap to keep the rain from plunking into her eyes.

She runs between the raindrops, feeling the coolness on her skin from the drops that do manage to catch her. She smiles, thinking about how some days she is still strangely amused by the fact that she wants to run. Who is this girl?

Alone with her thoughts - the good, and the bad. No one to interupt her as she mulls over this relationship, or that one. The bills and the homework, and the schedules, all drifting through her mind. She frowns when she sees that the driveway still has an empty space.

She runs up the hill, to that mailbox that used to seem SO far away, the one that she chased again and again and again, always secretly wondering what the owners would think, if they saw her shuffle up to it and tap it purposefully, before turning around, squaring her shoulders, and running back down the hill.

She runs her victory lap, and it is awesome.

Parting words

I love Manhattan. I really do. I told my mother that I would live there in a heartbeat if I could. I think her heart skipped a beat, in horror. She hated living there (but she lived in the Bronx when I was born. SO not the same thing.)

Several times over my short trip I found myself walking down the street (usually 5th ave, but Broadway too) thinking "Oh my god, I love it here." I really wanted to stay forever. Maybe it was the novelty of how many things there are to do in Manhattan. I want to visit all of the galleries and museums, hang out on a blanket in Central Park, go visit the Statue... so many things, so little time.

I've already started my escape fund, so that I can go back alone again. I'm SO not kidding. No one to feed/dress/pick up after? Life is good. Sitting on my bed in my hotel room in my underwear, having a drink and eating pastry from a little bakery I found down the street, while I watch a nice flat screen tv? (sorry, TMI there probably but...) that was a little slice of bliss for me.

In and around my training (yes! business travel - gotta love it) I managed to see QUITE a bit in just a few days. Here are some highlights:

  • Empire State Building. We covered the wait, and the smell. But it is a great view and a damn good looking building.

  • Rockefeller center... apparently Top of the Rock is "the new ESB"... better view, including the ESB AND Central Park... and appointments instead of lonnnnng waits. No ice in the summer, but of course:

  • (there is a nice little cafe across the street, http://www.deananddeluca.com/ where you can get an iced tea and something to nosh on to pep up, midafternoon, and shop for gourmet treats)

  • You can tour NBC studios, again with a specific appointment time rather than just waiting aimlessly in line. (Note: I called ahead, the person on the phone told me there were NO more slots open on the tours that day; when I actually walked in to double check since I went up to walk around Rockefeller center anyway, I easily purchased a ticket for a tour that would start an hour later. Moron. Don't answer the phone if you don't know what you're talking about.) So anyway, the Saturday Night Live studio is a fun tour. No cameras allowed... I also volunteered along with some other woman to do the news in a mock newsroom setup for the tour. That damn teleprompter scrolls fast. (Yes, I am That Girl Who Volunteers... no one knew me - why not?)
  • Food. FOOD! I had a phenomenal dish at Salmon River (about 40th & Madison). It was Hibachi salmon. Japanese mushrooms & eggplant and seaweed and rice noodles. It was to die for. And of course when I went to Lunella Ristorante I enjoyed that meal just as much.

  • I even saw Kathy Griffin do her comedy act. What? Yes, ok, it was on Bravo and I was in my room. Whatever. I love her.
  • Dear bitch at the starbucks attached to my Lilliputian hotel : I don't care if you don't like it that I asked for a cup of ice water along with my food and beverage I bought. Don't bitch to your pal about how "We are hydrating the people of NYC and we can't even charge for it." Yes, I heard you. That is why I made you fill the cup with water when I noticed you'd only put ice in it. I don't make the policy, your boss does. PS: I would have paid for it, if there was a charge. I was thirsty, dammit.
  • I bought this , and this and put back this in the MoMA store. Wanted to buy at least 3 MORE.

  • Wanna buy a bridge? I've got one.

That girl

It was dance recital night tonight... so I was ready, having spent a few days not yielding to oncoming traffic (OR rude people.)

I was not surprised when I told one woman "Please don't shoot over the photographer's shoulder" and she pissed and moaned about it. I mean, truly, went on and on, "I'm buying the most expensive freaking package." Yes, but you won't like it if her eyes are focused on YOUR camera, not the person doing the package, will you?

I was truly amused when I heard two people mutter "Oh, there's that girl, I remember her." "Yeah, I complained about her." Oh, you so did not, or I would know... and you're still not getting the point, are you ladies??

Mwahahaha.

But the HIGH point of the evening was a woman who was so exasperated with her teenager, she turned to me and said "This is why we should eat our young." I lost it, right there. You did NOT just actually say that. Too funny!

More NY

Yesterday afternoon I had time to tool around Manhattan before my train ride home. So I used the Gray Line bus tour (once I figured out that all you have to do to get a ticket is walk up to one of the guys holding up the poster of the bus tour route! D'oh!!) and did some sightseeing. It was gorgeous weather, by the way. I had a great lunch in Little Italy. Yum, pasta and wine. Two of my very favorite things.

During part of my touring I went to the WTC site. It's fenced in, of course, to keep people like me out of the way. There's a new building, shown here, that replaces one that fell after the two main towers, later in the evening. I thought the way that it reflected the clouds was beautiful. (They're still working on the overall site, obviously.)

I sat across the street in the cemetary/ garden behind St. Paul's chapel. It's across the street from where I took the first picture. I was there more or less to pay my respects, and I ended up thinking for a while about what it must be like to lose your soulmate, your partner, your best friend. How it must feel at times like it was someone else's life, that time so long ago, almost six years gone. Then in the blink of an eye, something happens - a rainy day or a particular song, a glimpse of someone in a crowd, or the mention of any random little favorite thing that you shared, and bam. It feels like it was only yesterday.

I thought about how my life has changed, since that day. I guess I thought along those lines because it was the same type of sunny, warm day - - with a sky so bright and beautiful it's hard to imagine that it could be any other shade of blue, ever. I thought about the relationships in my life -- the ones I still have, and the ones I don't.

I thought about the person who was my best friend on September 11th, and how I had to cut her out of my life a couple of years ago. She had been home on maternity leave on 9-11, and was reacting to things as she saw them live on tv, and telling me about them over the phone. Now we don't speak.

Things deteriorated between us over time, for various reasons, until I finally had to say "no thank you... you can keep that." You see, if someone gives you something, you can choose to keep it, or refuse to accept it. I just could not accept the disrespect and other negative things she continuously gave to me. (When I finally told her how I felt, her husband sent me an email insulting me repeatedly and twisting every part of my life around to put a negative spin on it. That's when I was 100% sure I had done the right thing.)

I thought about some of my other friendships, and how certain friends have encouraged me to follow silly little dreams like "I can run a 5K", and how those friends manage to see the very best parts of me, and encourage me to be THAT girl. (Yes, you. I love you for that. You know who you are. )

There are definitely areas of my life that are in varying degree of disarray; I don't usually blog about them for two reasons. One, this blog was started for creative writing / "happy place" purposes. Corny, but true. The other is that I don't want to put some of these things out on the internet. I mean, why do people really blog about their worst problems?? (Who doesn't have problems?? Raise your hand, so I can punch you.) Anyway, I mull them over, I try to figure out what to do, how to get out of the tangle of knots I have put myself in. Some days, I feel like I'm wandering around without a map, but I haven't given up hope just yet.

If you've ever heard of Keith Anderson, he has a haunting song about chasing your dreams, called "I'll know when I get there". It's completely different from his other "stuff". I love it because it encapsulates that feeling I carry inside, that I know exactly what I want, and I'm not really sure I can ever have it, but if I ever manage to get there, I'll know, and I'll be so damn grateful, I won't waste a moment of it.

(A more upbeat post will follow, in a day or two, with a few final shots from my touring. )

A - NY Minute

Greetings from Manhattan... home of the Empire State Building. If you take the letters of the words "Empire State Building" and rearrange them, you get "Big line - me, despair" with the letters TUT left over (for Thousands of Unsuspecting Tourists).

Last night I "called ahead to see what the wait time is" because when I bought my ticket online there was a number to do that. Sucker! He told me 15 minutes. (another anagram - butt lie, me despairing....) It was about 15 minutes before my totebag was x-rayed. BUT....

Then I waited in a line that snaked one way, then another. Every five minutes the line would lurch forward about 100 people or so. It didn't seem too bad. Then I realized that when the line left my area of sight, it was just ANOTHER line in another hallway. At last - the elevators. Which open to reveal, yes, another line. Snaking around a floor that is under reconstruction and currently looks like something any slumlord would be proud to own. The purpose of this floor seems to be to put you in front of a green screen to fake a beautiful shot of you on top of the building... which will later be offered to you for $25. (It was a crummy picture of me, so no.)

After well over 90 minutes, when my feet really effing hurt, I finally popped out at the top. Well, the gift shop at the top, of course. And then I went outside to the cool night air. Which smelled like garbage and other things I don't want to think about, on certain areas of the observation deck. Really special. Maybe I was just tired, but after a few minutes I was all "Meh.... damn... I waited so long to come up here, now I can't just leave in 5 minutes...."

It was a little bit of a bummer because I was up there alone, and there were of course couples making out everywhere. So there's that. Maybe I'll have better luck with the NBC tour tonight, if I can get in... I'm sure it's only a 10 or 15 minute wait.

Carly, out!

More news coverage of the race

Sunday, June 3, 2007

A 40-something mother of two from upstate New York* chased the leaders for a brief interval during the middle of the Freihofer's Run for Women yesterday.

The novice runner was as surprised as the media pool when she came around a turn and saw the elite field a few yards in front of her.

When asked for a comment, the Mom replied "Whaa? You woke me up... I was taking a nap... I was having the BEST dream, why did you wake me up? No, you can't have a snack. Turn the tv off and go outside."

Some of you didn't get to see all of my Chico photos - they were part of a long elaborate practical joke on a coworker. So since I now have photo editing skills I entertained myself this morning by creating the above picture. I'm sure y'all can pick me out! I did race with them, but I never got quite (ok, anywhere NEAR) this close.

If you would like to see actual, untampered photos of the race, in which I do not appear... click here: http://timesunion.com/ - there are several stories about the Freihofer's Run for Women, and a photo gallery.

*(whose son actually commented to her, "Mom, you were, uh... bigger... before you started running"...)

I did it!

It was SOOOOO hot and muggy. Where was the rain we were supposed to have????

I finished in under an hour- I noticed the time was around 52 minutes when I was approaching the finish line... and I started at the VERY back* ... so since I probably started about 5 minutes behind the lead racers, I definitely reached my goal. I did enjoy it and I will defnitely do it next year... (but I will never, ever carry a bottle of gatorade again... it made me want to puke...)

I would say I probably walked just about as much as I ran today because it was at least 85 degrees and muggy... I would get to a point where I felt TOO hot and a little sick... so I'd walk... I felt a little crummy afterward, but it was so nice to see my sister and my daughter cheering for me right near the finish line, as well as T from work who waited for me there at the end.

*(I cried, just a little, at the starting line, because I was so afraid all of the people around me were just going to take off, and little old me would be left behind. It didn't happen that way. There were a few people that I didn't see run at all. They walked. I finished ahead of about 10 people... so that was cool.)

My daughter was kind of just hanging around, but had this to offer after the race: "Man... some of these people smell."

And, I was not last.

But then, I didn't see that 81 year old lady either....

PS: congrats Mark & Holly!!!!

Aaaaaarrrrrrghhhh

Well this is strange, and the people all look groady. No, really.

***

I'm bothered by various things today. Some are work related and I can't/ won't share. I'm not really thrilled with a couple of people there, and how they conduct themselves. Let's leave it at that.

***

I'm also bothered by a local news story:

A young woman (in her 20's) is in critical condition after she was hit by a minivan going through an intersection on an Albany street. Police don't know who she is because she wasn't carrying any ID while she rode her bike. The accident happened just after 8 a.m. Wednesday. The woman is at Albany Medical Center where she underwent surgery; her injuries are considered to be life-threatening.

No id. Her family doesn't know where she is.

(Edit - her family has been located as of 6 pm Thursday....)

Carry SOMETHING, if you run, walk, bike, rollerblade, ride a pogo stick, whatever. Me, I wear Road ID. $20 for a wristband or tag to attach to your sneaker.

And for crying out loud, ALL bicyclists should wear a helmet. She didn't have that on either, as far as I've seen in the news. My college roommate's dad survived a horrible bike+car collision because he wore his stinking helmet. Smarten up, people!!

Dear

.... lady who jogged by me, going in the opposite direction, in the park today:

it was really nice of you to stop and tell me that you're very impressed by my running... and to even repeat it... "really impressed". The way you said it, made me think you live in that neighborhood and have seen me running up and down all of the hills, beet red and gasping and all that.

I really appreciate it, because to be honest, I was a little freaked out over the weekend when I ACTUALLY GOT IT (the brochure -- my runner's instructions for the race WITH MY BIB NUMBER AND EVERYTHING), and I freak a little whenever I think about it being This-Saturday- And I Really Have To Do This.

I really appreciate it because when I started it I wanted to have an "after" picture by now... I have the "before" picture, from last August at the beach. I just don't look all that different yet. At least, not to me. Most of my clothes still don't fit and I'll be damned if the scale doesn't still say exactly the same number it did when I went back to work after my surgery... my face came back to where it doesn't look all puffy anymore, but my face forgot to tell my ass to get its act together.

What is it they say, after a certain age, you have to choooose whether your ass looks good, or your face? (skinny ass, gaunt face... know what I mean?)

I really appreciate it because, tut tut, it looks like rain this weekend and what if it freakin thunders and I can't decide what to wear anyway and oh my god the running shorts I bought the other day are the most uncomfortable bloody things I have ever owned when I'm actually running, so THOSE are going in that part of the closet shrouded in darkness....

...but you motivated me to keep running today, and I need to do that. Even though I have visions of the police holding back the traffic on Madison ave so I can stumble through.... which I am trying hard to put out of my mind and all...

So thanks.

Reviews

Pirates of the Carribean: One hundred and sixty eight minutes. Plenty of time for my ass to fall asleep. It was a good movie, but I'm sure it COULD have been shortened or maybe (oh, the horror...) broken into two parts. I did enjoy it - especially the part that happens between when the sun sets and the sun rises.

Quizno's - chicken carbonara - yummy but it would be much better if the mushrooms were cooked.

I bought new sneakers - I bought Mizuno Wave Riders after extensive research. Well, my reasearch method was to try on a bunch of pairs (all different brands) and buy the ones that DIDN'T feel like I had red bricks duct taped to my feet. I never heard of Mizuno. Not the most expensive, by far - around $80, which is the most every spent on sneakers by Moi... but I put them on last night and went for a run (when it got a little cooler - we hit 90* here yesterday) and they felt great. No blisters, either. ONE WEEK!!!

Then it was on to the garden. I already have a few buds on my Coreopsis bush, and I was in the mood to buy some lavendar flowers yesterday. Again I was in the "I'll just check out what's here, and pick from that" mood, and in the end I bought a few flowers - these and these, which are prettier than the picture seems. I planted them last night, so the garden looks much better now.

The ice cream maker was not the hit I'd hoped. It was ok, but kind of a pain to assemble, load the ingredients (the mini chocolate chips TOTALLY stuck together in the heat - better to go with mini M & M's....) etc. It also took much longer to freeze up than the directions said (since it was 90*). The girls liked it, but it wasn't HUGE.

Later!!!

another relaxing weekend

I always look forward to long weekends because I will sleep in, lounge around all day, catch up on some hobby time, etc.

Hahahaha.

This weekend I have to take the kids to see Pirates (I swear they asked me for Spiderman but that's another story....), get my garden fixed up, go to two cookouts, make a birthday cake for one of the cookouts, sing at church, have a small gaggle of girls sleep over at my house*.... I'm tired already just thinking about it all.

*Finally getting to use the Cuisinart ice cream maker that mixes in goodies while it dispenses the ice cream.... which reminds me, I need to be RUNNING often this weekend.

* * *

Have a great weekend. Don't forget WHY we actually have this holiday. The other night at the parade, I caught the eye of a Gold Star mother, as she was riding by. My son was standing next to me as I paid my respects to her, for the son she gave up all of those years ago. Remember what it's all about people - that's all I ask.

I love a parade

Tonight was our town's Memorial day parade.

While we were waiting for the parade to start this lady was taking down her xmas lights. Then she sat on the windowsill holding a baby - yes, a baby - to watch part of the parade.

The next time I looked up the baby was gone but she had dropped something else, and it was waaaaaaay down near the edge of the roof - - so she was down there picking it up. Looked like it might have been a cordless phone.

Awesome - crime scene tape

...the above is a direct quote from 9 year old's reaction to his "detective kit" package this month (book club, kind of like the cd club where you get one every month until you make it stop...) It doesn't take much to make a kid happy.

This month was a book, some "Crime scene - do not enter" tape and a jar of fingerprinting powder. Obviously no one ran these contents by any advisory board of MOMs, who might point out that a loose jar of at least 2 oz. of green powder is not the thing to give the average (messy) nine year old boy.

I'm thinking of putting some tape across my office doorway before I leave work tomorrow. I won't be in Friday... they can just wonder.

That's all I've got for now.

C ya

I am in a mood to Chatter, and so on...

I made a playlist of everything in my iTunes library that starts with C (for Carly.... of course!) and then I deleted all of the Christmas songs. It's not bad. Can't stand losing you. Clocks. Cray little thing called love... others...

Countdowns... I am thinking about my race (12 days!!) , and my trip to NYC, which is not long after that. Neither of which I'm truly ready for but I still can't wait. It's nice to have something out of the usual routine

Clingy. I'm not wanting to let go of certain things and certain people. Like the school year. I don't want my kids to be a year older. I don't want to stop singing with my church choir for the summer. (I'm always afraid Stanley will decide to retire over the summer and I'll never sing some of those songs again.)

C ooking... gotta go (teriyaki steak...)

Bowled over

The scene... our school's annual "mother-son bowling" party.

Me... talking about how I suck at bowling - mightily.

Then, in the first frame, I threw a strike. So then I had to listen to a lot of talk, until I got up there in frame 2 and threw a gutter ball to save my reputation.

I never made it over 100 in either game. There's always next year. Unfortunately! (Sorry Marco!)

Start spreading the news

I'm leaving... uh, in a couple of weeks.

I will be going to NYC next month. Some training I wanted locally was cancelled, and so I found the identical training in the ci-tay. It took some nagging, but I got my boss to agree to it.
I'm SO happy. I will be on the top of the ESB, waving. Hard to miss, I know.

Answer

USA Track & Field (USATF) recently adopted a new rule banning the use of headphones and other music devices at all USATF-sanctioned running events. USATF, the governing body for long-distance running and track & field in the United States, adopted the rule (#144.3b) in an effort to increase runner safety.

Phooooey.

Bummer

Get well soon, Jenna! "Pam" from the Office broke several bones in her back falling down a flight of stairs. She is expected to fully recover, which is good news. Here are my first two thoughts on reading the article:

#1 Wow, she's a klutz like me (I could trip on a flat floor... I once did... and needed a plastic surgeon to fix my lip. He was a big game hunter and his waiting room was FREAKY. But that's a story for another time... or not.)

#2 This could really have wrapped up the annoying Jim - Karen - Pam triangle once and for all.

Honestly I'm over it. Get them together or don't -- but stick with the funny stuff. Not the longing sighs, the "who will finally make the move" soap opera stuff. It's a comedy.

Questions of the day

1. On race day (only 17 more days!), do I run while listening to my iPod? Is it allowed? Too distracting given the number of other runners around me? Is it rude? Will it keep me from hearing the crowd? (Don't I want that? Heh. Just kidding.)

What do other runners do?

2. Why does blogger do this to me, every time I try to write a new post?

Links

Mother's Day... yeah, I don't have much to say there. Except that my friend (someone from choir) lost her mother the other day, so they said the mom's name at mass today, and she turned and looked at me, and ugh. Talk about feeling helpless. Handing someone kleenex and giving them a hug seems so .... inadequate.

So here are some links I found trying to get my mind off of things like that....

I have received some lime vodka that I need to decide what to do with. Votes? and don't pick the obviously most rudely named one, please.

I saw this book in Borders tonight while I was on my cellphone talking to Suzy and we were hysterical. I mean, "knitting" and "lingerie" just do NOT go together. At all. Seriously, it says "Take a peek inside the book here" and you must do it, to get even a hint of the wrongness of it.

I actually bought this book because it reminds me of one of my favorite bad movies. No, not Sin City. National Treasure, which apparently has a sequel in the works??? Who knew?

My boyfriend had a funny tv special - a Behind the Scenes show about good Eats. I heart Alton. I really, really do. Why can't I work on a cool tv show like his?

(Before I forget, thanks, for the ongoing encouragement with my running. I REALLY appreciate it.)

Lastly, I got new glasses. I really love them, because I splurged and bough Transitions lenses. It's the first time I've actually LIKED wearing glasses.

Not Least?

After perusing last year's stats on the Friehofer website yesterday, I came to a discouraging conclusion.

I may be the VERY last finisher. There is an 81 year old woman who can apparently run circles around me. She will be done and drinking gatorade, and I'll still be trudging along.

Unless I trip her.

I pondered all of that this morning while I was running, and yes, I am still going to run, and if all goes well Suzy will be there at the finish line (good bonus, she's a nurse) -- right now she doesn't have to work so keep your fingers crossed. Just for the record, I ruled out tripping anyone...

...but I am definitely NOT drinking beer with Yort and the K's the night before. Even if they ARE drinking Sam Adams Summer Ale, which is awesome.

That 70's show

Tomorrow for the school concert some of the kids have to wear 70's clothing. Huge synthetic afro - $10. Peace necklace and sunglasses- $6. Skinny white boy in the above.... well you know how it goes.

***

Last night I had the house to myself for about an hour (that NEVER happens) so I sat on my deck with cheese, crackers, and wine - Alto Adige 2005 Pino Grigiot. Nice... yes, I was listening to Michael Buble' too. Get over it.

***
I am also a candle junkie. New Yankee Candle scents that "mysteriously" appeared in my home last week include... (from the world fragrance collection...)Vera Cruz Vanilla, Tahitian Tiare Flower, Brazillian Passion fruit; (other new spring fragrances... ) Spring Bouquet, Sun and sand; also Greenhouse, (and...) MacIntosh & Peach. No, not all jars. I did show a morsel of restraint and got mostly votives, AND I had a coupon for the jars. This would be why Master Card and I will always be pen pals. Forever.

Girl who runs like chicken

Today it's about 80*. Pefect day for a beginner to go for a run in the blazing sun. :::wink::

I made it about 20 minutes, with some running, some walking, and of course it's up and down hills in the park where I go to run (it's nice, pine trees, a water feature, etc)

Had a great big bottle of water with me... which I finished. Only 25 more days!!

Sunday Notes

Well, today I redeemed myself in the choir loft and sang the actual notes on the music I was holding. Stanley couldn't resist torturing me by saying "do verse 3!" afterward, as if I'd forgotten to do it. Sometimes I make him laugh by holding my music upside down if it's got an obvious cover. Yes, I really live on the edge.

I have determined that once again this season my son plays best when I'm not watching (baseball this time).

Evidence:
  • Thursday - scrimmage - struck out while I was watching; hit a triple not long after I left for choir(also, unfortunately, while catching, whipped mask off to get a ball, then caught that ball with his nose. Rubbed nose for next two days.)
  • Saturday - foul out ; while I wasn't watching he caught a stinger at first base to get the batter out. Rubbed hand remainder of day.
  • Today - when I had the camera OFF, he batted, hit a single, but made it to second on an error.* Also while I was not watching, he got hurt again as catcher, took a pitch to his inside wrist. I may need to roll him up in bubble wrap.

* At least he's nice. Maybe a bit too nice. He crashed in to the first baseman, stopped to see if he was OK, then ran to second and third. He had to go back to 2nd for the crash....

All a-Twitter

In case you haven't heard of http://twitter.com/ here is an article... Twitter Nation

And, here's my twittering: at work today,
  • my iPod battery died
  • when I went to borrow a charger from JV, my shoe broke on the way back to my desk (a lovely slingback I was quite fond of, for you shoe fans...)
  • I considered stapling the strap back together in another friend's office
  • I was forced to cob-job it back together with needle and thread
  • I returned to my desk and read the online recap of LOST. Seriously, WTF? I am so annoyed with it. "Don't you KNOW where we are?" But oh, gory. Yucky.
  • as a capper to the day I found out the 3 day class I was supposed to take is cancelled. Dammit. I really wanted that training.

.... ta ta for now.... fire up your Tivo's and DVD's for a great tv night!!! extra long episode of The Office! Boo yah!!!

Bad idea of the day

...today's prize goes to whoever thought up the new Traveler's Insurance commercial.

You know, the one with rabbits with one front foot a deep color 9like blue, red, etc...) because they had the foot re-attached because they have such great insurance.

Ugh.

GATHER ROUND!!!

...
