I want the kids to start practicing more(ok, more than the NOT AT ALL they do now) so I am planning to leave space between the two desks where they can leave their instruments and music and so on.

Is your desk in the corner, facing out into the room? What a great idea!!! The kids both have their music stands in their bedrooms, always set up. Lucky for me I don't have to nag .. they practice on their own.. sometimes together (one's a trumpet, one's a clarinet).
It looks lovely, from that limited photo.. maybe you'll give us a tour??
